The Holy Monastery of Vlacherna
The Holy Monastery of Vlacherna was built in the 17th century and is connected to the mainland by a bridge flanked with fishing boats. A view of Mouse island offers you a picturesque short walk to the Monastery. The unique building of the Monastery is distinguished by its unusual shaped tiled roof and intense white walls that sharply contrast with the lush landscape and striking colours of the sea.
Church of Pantokrator on Pontikonissi (Mouse island)
The Church of Pantokrator on Pontikonissi (Mouse island) is several hundred years old and sits on the small island surrounded by the crystal turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. The Vlacherna monastery in the background sets the stage for your wedding photographs. According to legend, Pontikonissi was Ulysses’ ship, the vessel that brought the legendary king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey to the island of the Phaeacians. It was during a terrible storm that the boat was washed on the shores of the island and the god Poseidon turned the boat into stone.
